# os-totebox: The Sovereign WORM Data Vault (Intended Design)

**Correction (2026-07-18):** this article describes os-totebox's intended end-state
architecture — the seL4 Microkit bare-metal image is planned for Phase H1 of the
platform roadmap and has not shipped. The `os-totebox` binary running today is a
conventional Rust/tokio process (`service-content` + `service-slm`/Doorman run as one
deployable process, per the crate's own description) — not a seL4 bare-metal OS. The
capability-graph/Protection-Domain design below is real, intended engineering work, not
fabrication, but it is future-tense throughout — read every present-tense claim in this
article as "designed to" or "intended to," not as a description of the software as
deployed today. `bcsc_class` corrected to `forward-looking` to match.
**Status (2026-08-06):** the seL4 Microkit image described in this article has moved
from planned to live-verified. A real boot of the image is confirmed, with end-to-end
inference round-trips confirmed working — the capability-graph and Protection-Domain
design below is real, current engineering, not merely intended work or a paper design.
This is a verified boot milestone on the seL4 path specifically; it is not yet a
description of os-totebox's general deployment, which remains the conventional
Rust/tokio process (`service-content` + `service-slm`/Doorman run as one deployable
process) described in the platform's engineering registry. `bcsc_class` stays
`forward-looking`: the full production stack, capability-graph enforcement at scale, and
the persistence guarantees this article argues for are not yet real — see Known
limitations, below, before treating this as a deployed, persistent sovereign vault. Read
every other present-tense architectural claim in this article as the target design,
confirmed today only at the boot-and-inference layer described here.

## Known limitations (2026-08-06)

Three gaps are open against this article's own positioning as a persistent sovereign
vault, and are load-bearing for anyone evaluating the design today:

- **Storage is not yet persistent.** The deployed guest's virtio-blk storage device is
  never actually mounted. A guest reboot wipes all data — a direct, current gap against
  the "persistent WORM vault" positioning this article argues for.
- **Graceful shutdown is broken.** Shutdown via QMP (QEMU Machine Protocol) is documented
  as broken: the guest has no ACPI or power-button device to receive a shutdown request.
  Redeploys currently hard-kill the guest, with no checkpoint guarantee at the moment of
  kill.
- **Nothing anchors or signs the ledger yet.** The integrity-anchoring companion service
  has been failing since 2026-08-01, and checkpoint signing is deliberately left unset at
  this baseline. The WORM ledger runs, but no external anchor and no signature currently
  attach to its checkpoints.

None of this is a fabricated risk — it is the current, factual state of the deployed
build. The boot and inference verification above is real and current; the vault's
persistence, availability, and ledger-anchoring guarantees are not yet delivered.

Every organisation that relies on a third-party platform to store its records is making an implicit wager: that the platform provider will remain solvent, accessible, and free of security failures for as long as those records matter.
