not yet the seL4 bare-metal OS this article describes. Confirmed the rest of this article

**Status (2026-08-06):** the seL4 Microkit image this article describes has moved from
planned to live-verified. A real boot of the image is confirmed, with end-to-end
inference round-trips confirmed working — the seven-Protection-Domain design below is
real, current engineering, not merely a paper design. This is a verified boot milestone
on the seL4 path specifically; os-totebox's general deployment remains the conventional
Rust/tokio process (`service-content` + `service-slm`/Doorman running as one process)
described in the platform's engineering registry. `bcsc_class` stays `forward-looking`:
the production-scale PD stack and the persistence/integrity guarantees this article
depends on are not yet real — see Known limitations, below.

## Known limitations (2026-08-06)

Three gaps are open against this article's own claims about the WORM ledger, and are
load-bearing for anyone evaluating the design today:

- **Storage is not yet persistent.** The deployed guest's virtio-blk storage device is
  never actually mounted. A guest reboot wipes all data — a direct, current gap against
  the append-only, durable ledger this article describes service-fs PD as enforcing.
- **Graceful shutdown is broken.** Shutdown via QMP (QEMU Machine Protocol) is documented
  as broken: the guest has no ACPI or power-button device to receive a shutdown request.
  Redeploys currently hard-kill the guest, with no checkpoint guarantee at the moment of
  kill.
- **Nothing anchors or signs the ledger yet.** The integrity-anchoring companion service
  has been failing since 2026-08-01, and checkpoint signing is deliberately left unset at
  this baseline. The WORM ledger runs, but no external anchor and no signature currently
  attach to its checkpoints.

None of this is a fabricated risk — it is the current, factual state of the deployed
build. The boot and inference verification above is real and current; the ledger's
persistence, availability, and anchoring guarantees are not yet delivered.

[[os-totebox]] is designed to be the Sovereign WORM Data Vault tier of the [[topic-three-binary-architecture|three-binary architecture]], intended to run as a Type I bare-metal OS on top of the [[sel4-microkernel-substrate|seL4 microkernel]] — no shell, no root process, no init system, no package manager — once the Phase H1 seL4 image ships. In that end-state design, every service that handles durable data becomes a seL4 Protection Domain (PD): a hardware-enforced isolation unit whose capability set is fixed at build time and cannot be extended at runtime.
