`os-console` is one product. There is no "Home" edition and no "Pro" edition. An individual hosting one Totebox uses the same Command Ledger as the administrator of a [[compliance-and-continuous-disclosure|Reporting Issuer]] aggregating hundreds. Commercial differentiation is determined by the presence or absence of `os-orchestration`, never by a tiered Console. The [[six-tier-sovereignty-matrix|six-tier sovereignty model]] governs how commercial tiers are structured across the platform.

## Why this design: the browser analogy

`os-console` is designed by analogy to a web browser — intended as a structural correspondence, not merely a metaphor, once the design is fully built out. Several rows below (the seL4 Protection Domain boundary between cartridges, the bootable-VM-image packaging) are still planned, not current — the analogy holds today for the pieces already built and is the design target for the rest.

The key distinction from a web browser: `os-console` connects to hardware under the operator's physical control. The Totebox is not a cloud service, and the data does not leave the operator's premises.

**Machine pairing as the certificate store.** A browser's certificate store establishes which servers are trusted; the F11 SystemCartridge plays the same role for a Totebox. It presents a QR code, the Totebox operator scans it, and the Totebox issues capability tokens for the authorized cartridge services — the host machine is authorized, not a user account. Revocation propagates immediately: removing a machine pairing on the Totebox takes effect on the console's next request, with no grace period.

**Beyond the clipboard.** A browser does not use the clipboard to submit a form or attach a file — the interaction is structured. `os-console` is designed toward the same model: the clipboard is a baseline, and the intended structured-interaction surface (planned) is a **Totebox Watch Folder** — a local directory mounted into the console via VirtIO-fs, where a file the operator drops in is read as a form submission by the appropriate cartridge rather than pasted as raw text.

**The bootable browser.** The intended final form of `os-console` (planned) is a bootable VM image the operator runs on a dedicated machine, inside their existing OS as a VM, or as a [[virtual-appliance|virtual appliance]] — containing the seL4 Microkit kernel, the cartridge PDs, the VirtIO drivers, and nothing else: no general-purpose OS underneath, no shell, no package manager. For the operator with no IT department, the intended experience is: download the image, run it, scan the QR code to pair, and use F-keys to navigate between cartridges — no IP addresses to type, no ports to remember, no SSH keys to manage.
