Just Enough Operating System (JeOS, commonly pronounced "juice") is a philosophy and practice of customizing an operating system to include only those components required to support a specific application or service. Rather than installing a general-purpose Linux distribution and subsequently removing unused components, a JeOS image is built from the minimum set of packages required for the target workload — a kernel, essential runtime libraries, and the application itself — with all other components absent.

The JeOS approach emerged from the recognition that general-purpose operating systems carry a substantial overhead of components that serve a wide range of users and use cases, but any given production workload requires only a fraction of this capability. Unused components are not merely wasteful in terms of memory and storage; they represent an attack surface: services that are not running cannot be exploited; libraries that are not installed cannot harbor vulnerabilities. The JeOS philosophy treats every installed package not required by the target application as a security liability and a maintenance obligation with no benefit.

## Relationship to virtual appliances and software appliances

JeOS is the operating system layer within a software appliance or virtual appliance. A software appliance combines a minimal operating system (the JeOS layer) with a specific application, pre-configured to run that application and distributed as a self-contained unit. The appliance format — whether as a virtual machine image in OVF format, a container image, or a hardware appliance — provides an immutable runtime that is easier to update, patch, and reason about than a general-purpose OS with a large installed package set.

The JeOS concept is distinguished from a standard minimized installation in that minimization removes packages from a baseline installation after the fact, leaving configuration artifacts from the removed packages. A JeOS image starts from nothing and adds only what is required — the difference between clearing a room and furnishing it from scratch. The resulting image has no configuration debt from packages that were once installed and removed.

## Typical JeOS components

A JeOS image for a network service application might include:

- **Kernel** — a compiled Linux kernel with only the modules required by the target hardware or virtual machine environment; unused drivers and filesystem support compiled out
- **Init system** — a minimal init process or systemd with only required units enabled
- **C runtime library** — typically glibc or musl libc, with only the components required by the target application
- **Network stack** — IP networking, TLS, and required protocol support; no GUI networking tools
- **Target application and its runtime dependencies** — no more, no less
- **Audit and logging** — syslog or journald as required by operational policy
- **SSH server** — for remote administration (often the only administrative interface)

Components that would be present in a general-purpose distribution but absent from a JeOS image include: graphical desktop environment and all GUI libraries; compilers, debuggers, and development tools; package managers (in immutable appliance configurations); documentation; localization data beyond the required locale; and all services not required by the target application (print spoolers, audio services, Bluetooth stack, mail transfer agents).

## Security advantages

The primary security benefit of the JeOS approach is attack surface reduction. In security architecture, attack surface refers to the sum of different points where an unauthorized user can try to enter data to or extract data from an environment. Every installed service that is not required by the target application represents a potential attack vector that provides no benefit — it can only increase risk. By removing these components, the JeOS approach eliminates entire classes of vulnerabilities.

A JeOS image for a web application server requires no SMTP mail transfer agent, no FTP server, no Samba file-sharing stack, and no remote procedure call daemon — all services that have historically been sources of major vulnerabilities. Removing them does not degrade the web application's functionality and permanently closes the corresponding attack paths.

The smaller package set also reduces the maintenance overhead of security patching: fewer installed packages means fewer CVEs to track and fewer packages to update in response to security disclosures. This property is particularly valuable in environments where patching requires coordination across multiple systems or where appliance images must be certified before deployment.

## Implementation approaches

**Build from source.** Linux From Scratch and similar approaches build the OS from source, selecting only the required components. This provides maximum control but requires significant expertise and is difficult to maintain over time as upstream packages update.

**Minimal distribution base.** Lightweight distributions such as Alpine Linux, which uses musl libc and BusyBox, provide a suitable JeOS-like baseline requiring approximately 8 MB for a Docker container image and 46 MB of RAM at runtime. The minimal base is then augmented with only the application and its direct dependencies.

**Container images.** Container technology — particularly Docker and OCI-format containers — has made the JeOS approach mainstream. Container images are built from a Dockerfile or equivalent specification that defines each layer of the image explicitly; unused packages are never added in the first place. Alpine Linux as a base image, combined with multi-stage builds that separate compilation environments from runtime environments, produces container images measured in megabytes.

**Purpose-built virtual machine images.** Tools such as packer, livemix, kiwi, and Ubuntu's JeOS builder produce minimal VM images for deployment on hypervisors, packaging only the components required for the target application.
